If you have a breastfeeding problem or question, I hope that this links on this page will help you find assistance. I have also provided some information on the differences between mother support counsellors and the professional support provided by lactation consultants, to enable you to decide who might be most appropriate for you to contact.

Mother Support Counselling

This type of counselling is provided free by volunteer counsellors who are also experienced breastfeeding mothers. They have completed a course of training and are required to keep their knowledge and skills up-to-date. Their area of expertise is breastfeeding information and management, so they can help mothers with the majority of problems and issues - from breastfeeding young babies right through toddlers and beyond.

Professional Support

International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs) are professional specialists in lactation management. The IBCLC credential identifies a health care provider who possesses the necessary skills, knowledge and attitudes to provide substantive breastfeeding assistance and skilled technical management of lactation-related problems. IBCLCs are required to practise within a Scope of Practice and a Code of Ethics. Recertification requirements ensure they keep their knowledge and skills current.

How do you find an IBCLC lactation consultant?
IBCLCs work in hospitals, community centres, clinics and private practice. Some facilities include IBCLC services free of charge to mothers already using that facility, and others charge a separate fee. IBCLCs in private practice do consultations for a fee; some do home visits. Your maternity care providers may be able to refer you to an IBCLC for a consultation, but you can also find one yourself and self-refer. The link below may be of assistance or you can ask other mothers in your local area.

Is the Lactation Consultant certified as an IBCLC?
The International Board of Lactation Consultants (IBLCE) has an online Registry at - click on 'Verify an IBCLC' and then search by name or ID number to check if someone is a currently certified IBCLC.
